A Catalog stores information of all data sets, files , databases, etc. It is basically used to store metadata. It has all the information regarding the database and the data like structure of the file, type of the data, size and storage format of data, external and internal schemas, their mappings, different constraints, etc.
-> Whenever some data has to be accessed from the database, the DBMS software accesses catalog to retrieve information regarding that database, table and schemas.
Metadata
Metadata is the additional information about the database files. The details of the schema, constructs and constraints is stored in the DBMS catalog. These details are known as metadata. This DBMS catalog can be referred anytime by the DBMS software whenever required.
-> For any document file, the metadata is the information like author of the file, date of publication, date of modification, size, etc. Metadata for images is the name, size , type of the image file. Metadata for webpages is the description of the webpage, keywords, etc. Similarly other files like audio files, video files, spreadsheets also have their own metadata.
